Hapag-Lloyd plays an active part in the consolidation of the international container shipping industry. In 2005, Hapag-Lloyd acquired the Canadian company CP Ships. At the end of 2014, Hapag-Lloyd merged with the Chilean shipping company CSAV. In early 2017, it completed its merger with the Arab liner shipping company UASC. And in 2017 we have also seen the launch of THE Alliance, a strong partnership with Asian carriers for the important east-west trade lanes, which was co-founded by Hapag-Lloyd. As a result, the company has strengthened its position as one of the largest liner shipping companies in the world.
Hapag-Lloyd is a global organisation with five regional headquarters in Hamburg, Piscataway, Valparaiso, Singapore and Dubai. The corporate headquarter is located in Hamburg, Germany, where the Executive Board is also based.
Like only a few other shipping companies, Hapag-Lloyd can look back on a long and storied tradition. Hapag-Lloyd as such was founded in 1970, almost 50 years ago, as a result of the merger of the leading German shipping lines Hapag and North German Lloyd. However, their twin histories began already 170 years ago, on May 27, 1847. In 2017 the company turned 170 years old.
